Tour Language

When it dried, it left behind two modern lakes, Poopó and Uru Uru, and two major salt deserts, Salar de Coipasa and the larger Salar de Uyuni. Uyuni originates from the Aymara language and means a pen (enclosure); Uyuni is also the name of a town that serves as a gateway for tourists visiting the Salar. The large area, clear skies, and exceptional flatness of the surface make the Salar ideal for calibrating the altimeters of Earth observation satellites. The Salar was formed as a result of transformations of seven Late Pleistocene lakes whose progressive desiccation led to the accumulation of extensive evaporitic salt deposits.

  • Isla Incahuasi, also known as Cactus Island, is a small, rocky outcrop located in the middle of the Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat, in Bolivia.
  • The savage beauty of this vast salt desert makes it one of South America’s most awe-inspiring spectacles.
  • It’s a good way to explore Uyuni salt flats as long as you don’t plan to cycle further to the altiplano.
  • Very few places on Earth bring together three simple elements—minerals, water, and light—in such a dramatic way.
  • Salar de Uyuni sits at an altitude of 3,650 metres and covers a staggering 10,000 sq km.
  • It was part of a prehistoric salt lake, Lago Minchín, which once covered most of southwest Bolivia.

The night sky is bright with stars, constellations, and even Milky Way which is perfectly reflected on the mirror-like surface with minimal light pollution and high altitude (wet season). There are reputable travel firms such as Gokite Oman which may help to organize well-curated tours with local Bolivian firms. When Opera Exploring Salar de Uyuni and the natural wonders around it, it is one of the most photogenic places to visit.
When you are Exploring Salar de Uyuni on a multi-day tour, chances are that you will be visiting this nearby reserve. When these ancient bodies of water evaporated due to time they left behind a thick crust of salt and other minerals and this is what we now call Salar de Uyuni. This spectacular salt flat that covers an area of 10,000 square kilometers is not only the largest in the world, but also one of the most astounding natural marvels in the earth. No special permission is required to enter the Uyuni salt flats. Towel and toiletries – these are not provided in standard tour salt hotels and refuges.

How to Reach Salar de Uyuni

Salar de Uyuni, located in southwest Bolivia near the crest of the Andes, is a remarkable natural area set in a high-altitude environment. One must-do activity in Bolivia is exploring the Salar de Uyuni, the world’s largest salt flat. Bolivia, located in the heart of South America, offers diverse travel experiences that can be enjoyed on a budget.
Some tours include an overnight stay near the salt flats, while others return to Uyuni the same day. • The fields of salt, extending as far as the eye can see and backed by distant mountains, create one of the most dramatic and unique vistas on Earth.
  • Unfortunately, our tour didn’t take us right to the lagoon; we could only see it from far away.
  • It was once a place of ceremony in Inca times (hausi means house in Quechua).
  • Uyuni itself offers little of interest and so it’s best to avoid spending more time here than necessary.
  • A multi-day Salar de Uyuni tour is essentially a tour of the reserve.
  • Unfortunately, standard 2-day tours don’t include these highlights.
  • Warm clothes – the altitude is high, and it gets quite cold at night, and below zero in winter months (June to August).

The island is a remnant of an ancient volcanic formation and was once part of a prehistoric lake. It’s a unique landscape featuring giant cacti, some reaching over 10 meters tall, thriving amidst the harsh, salty environment. The salt crusts and brine pools support a rich diversity of microbial communities, including halophilic archaea and bacteria that have adapted to the high salinity and other extreme conditions. The Salar de Uyuni is characterised by high salinity, low humidity, and a significant altitude, creating a challenging environment for most life forms. The savage beauty of this vast salt desert makes it one of South America’s most awe-inspiring spectacles.
It is estimated to contain around 10 billion tonnes of salt! Salar de Uyuni sits at an altitude of 3,650 metres and covers a staggering 10,000 sq km. (There are no day buses for some reason.) Local buses can be booked on busbud.com.

When to Visit Salar de Uyuni ❄️

In February 2024, the Copernicus Sentinel-3B mission conducted calibration activities over the salar for its Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter (SRAL). As part of its validation strategy, CryoSat-2 has relied on the salar, where its Interferometric synthetic-aperture radars (InSAR) capabilities were reinstated to enhance the precision of altimetric observations. The mission focused on calibrating radar-based measurements of surface topography.
A mesmerising and dazzling landscape, this vast salt plain is like nowhere else in the world! Bolivia’s Salt Flats are a breathtaking natural wonder. During the rainy season (usually December–March), a thin layer of water spreads over the salt surface—sometimes just a few millimeters, sometimes a bit more. It presents the most opportune moment to the travelers that wish to go exploring in 4×4 vehicles and see the islands that are found in the flats. The deserted plain is the perfect canvas for taking perspective photographs and when covered in a layer of water it becomes the world’s largest mirror, which makes for stunning reflective images. Sense of distance and perspective become skewed as the salty surface goes on mile after endless mile. As the water evaporated the salt crystalised and formed a crust, which is up to 10 m thick in some places. There are tours that run directly from the Chilean town of San Pedro de Atacama, which is close to the Bolivian border.
